Our hospital was established in 1949 with generous donations by citizens of the United States of America with Greek origins. The hospital is located in the city of Karystos in the south tip of Evia island.

The primary objective of all our specialist physicians, surgeons and nursing staff is the provision of the highest quality patient care in a professional, friendly and above all compassionate setting.

Origins of the hospital name “Διοκλειτιον” (Diocletion)

Diocles (c. 375-295 B.C.E.), was was one of the most renowned physicians of antiquity. He was born and raised in Karystos, Evia. Pliny refers to him as one of the founders of the art of medicine, right after Hippocrates (the famed physician from Kos). He authored many medical works (on anatomy, poisoning, female diseases, fever, digestion, medical herbs, surgical ligation). His work "On Anatomy" may be the first medical Greek treatise on anatomy. In addition, he is considered the inventor of the surgical instrument known as the "Dioclean cyathiscus" - which is suitable for the extraction of arrowheads embedded in the human body.
